Habituation

01

Habituation is the process where the brain learns to filter out intrusive tinnitus, lowering the perception of the sound. As it’s not regarded as a cure, some of those who are struggling with their tinnitus, may consider it an unsatisfactory solution – I know I did! But as the habituation process was allowed to unfold, the perception of my tinnitus diminished radically and eventually weeks could pass without me noticing it.

To me, and many others, a cure wouldn’t make much of a difference. The tinnitus is still there, but from having been intensely threatening, it’s now an indifferent part of myself. The challenge is to learn how to curb anxiety and fear, as these emotions fuel tinnitus perception and get in the way of the habituation process. The object is to become emotionally detached from your tinnitus. When you can listen to the sound indifferently, with no emotion or reaction – you have habituated.

My task is to provide you with the tool-kit to manage tinnitus. The habituation process is not linear, and it’s helpful to have strategies and thought processes in place when things are bad. Most people with tinnitus experience spikes (= tinnitus attacks), and these events can be intensely uncomfortable and frightening – but with helpful strategies they are easier to overcome.

My view on tinnitus management is very positive. For those who are struggling with their tinnitus it may be hard to understand the brain’s capacity to filter out the unwanted sounds. I will help you to understand and manage this process.
